What the place value calculator solves

The 4 in 4,825 is worth 4,000, while the 4 in 0.04 is worth four hundredths. This calculator labels every place, computes each digit's value, and writes the whole number in expanded form and in words so you can see the structure behind the numeral.

Reading large and small numbers
Whole-number places repeat in groups of three (ones, tens, hundreds) named thousands, millions, billions, trillions, and so on. Decimal places count to the right of the point: tenths, hundredths, thousandths, ten-thousandths. Notice there is no 'oneths' place; the ones place is the center and the decimal point sits just to its right.
How to use it

How to read the answer
Each step line pairs a digit with its place and value. Adding all the values gives the number back, which is what expanded form shows. The powers-of-ten form is the same sum written with The small raised number saying how many times to multiply the base by itself., useful for Writing a number as one digit, a decimal part, and a power of ten.. The word form follows the place names: the whole part, then 'and', then the decimal part read as a fraction of its smallest place.
Common mistakes and edge cases
- Calling the first decimal place 'oneths'; it is tenths.
- Reading 4.50 as four and fifty tenths; the last digit is in the hundredths place, so it is four and fifty hundredths.
- Skipping placeholder zeros in expanded form is fine, but skipping them in the numeral changes the number.
- Using 'and' for anything other than the decimal point when writing words: 4,825 is four thousand eight hundred twenty-five.
- Mixing up the value of a digit (4,000) with the digit itself (4).

The place value is the position's worth (ones, tens, hundreds, tenths, …). The value of the digit is the digit times that place: the 8 in 4,825 has place value hundreds and value 800.
What are the decimal place names?+
Tenths, hundredths, thousandths, ten-thousandths, hundred-thousandths, millionths, and so on, moving right from the decimal point.
How do I write a decimal in expanded form?+
Add each digit times its place: 4.36 = 4 + 0.3 + 0.06, or with fractions 4 + 3/10 + 6/100.

Why does 0 matter in a number like 4,025?+
It keeps the other digits in the correct places. Without it, 425 puts the 4 in the hundreds place instead of the thousands.
