What this final grade calculator solves
| Mode | Use it when | Output |
|---|---|---|
| Score needed on final | You know your current grade, target, and final weight | Required final exam score plus feasibility warnings |
| Projected course grade | You want to test a possible final score | Final course grade, letter grade, and target margin |
Formula
How to use it
- Enter your current grade before the final.
- Enter the target overall grade you want.
- Enter the final exam or project weight as a percent of the course.
- Choose projected mode if you already have a final score or want to run a what-if.
How to interpret the answer
A required score above 100% usually means the target is not reachable without extra credit or a curve. A required score below 0% means the target is already secured under the weights you entered.
Can I still get an A?
Use 90% as the target for a standard A- cutoff, or use the exact A cutoff from your syllabus. If the required final score is 100% or less, the target is mathematically reachable under the weights entered. If it is above 100%, you would need extra credit, a curve, or a lower target.
| Result | What it means | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Required score below 0% | You are already above the target even with a zero on the final. | Switch to projected mode if you want to see your likely final course grade. |
| Required score 0% to 100% | The target is reachable with a normal final exam score. | Use the scenario table to compare pass, C, B, and A targets. |
| Required score above 100% | The target is not reachable under normal scoring. | Ask about extra credit or compare a lower target such as passing or a B range. |
Finals week scenarios
- What do I need to pass? Set the target to your passing cutoff, often 60% or 70%.
- What if I get a zero? Use projected mode with a 0% final score.
- What if the final is worth 20%? Set final weight to 20 and compare the required score.
- Can I still get an A? Set target to your A cutoff and check whether the required final is at or below 100%.
Common mistakes
- Use the final's course weight, not the percent score you hope to get.
- Enter the current grade before the final, not a grade that already includes the final.
- If your class has categories, use the weighted grade calculator first to find the current grade.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate what I need on my final?+
Convert the final weight to a decimal, multiply your current grade by the remaining coursework weight, subtract that from your target, then divide by the final weight.
What if the calculator says I need more than 100%?+
That target is not reachable under normal grading unless your teacher offers extra credit, curves the final, or changes the grading weights.
Can the required final score be negative?+
Yes. A negative required score means your current grade is high enough that even a zero on the final would still meet the target you entered.
Should I include my final exam in my current grade?+
No. Use your current grade before the final. The calculator adds the final score separately using the final weight.
