Using 25 instead of 0.25 in the formula
Percent weights need to become decimals before substitution.
The question is really a weighted-average problem: part of your class grade is already locked in, and the final exam controls the remaining weight.
Use this when you know your current grade, target grade, and how much the final is worth.
required final = (target - current × (1 - final weight)) / final weight
Final weight must be written as a decimal in the formula. A final worth 25% becomes 0.25. The rest of the course is 1 - 0.25 = 0.75.
Your average before the final.
The course grade you want after the final.
The percent of the class controlled by the final.
Problem: You have 88%, want 90%, and the final is worth 25%.
Convert the weight: 25% = 0.25, so the completed coursework is 0.75.
Substitute: (90 - 88 × 0.75) / 0.25
Solve: (90 - 66) / 0.25 = 24 / 0.25 = 96
Answer: You need 96% on the final.
0% to 100%
The target is mathematically reachable on the final.
Over 100%
You need extra credit, a curve, or a lower target.
Below 0%
You have already secured the target, even with a very low final score.
Percent weights need to become decimals before substitution.
If the final is 25%, the completed coursework is 75%, not 25%.
Convert the current grade and target into the same scale before solving.
If your gradebook weights tests, homework, and projects separately, use the weighted grade calculator first.
Change the target from 90 to 85, or the final weight from 25 to 20, and watch how much the required score moves. That is usually the fastest way to understand your real range.

A required score above 100% means the target grade is not reachable from the final alone unless extra credit, a curve, or another grade change is available.
In most calculators, write 25. In the formula, convert it to 0.25 before multiplying or dividing.
Yes. It works for any final assessment with a fixed weight, including a final exam, project, presentation, or portfolio.
