What this weighted grade calculator solves
| Mode | Use it when | Output |
|---|---|---|
| Weighted course grade | You know category grades and category weights | Weighted grade, normalized grade, contributions, and steps |
| Needed on remaining work | You know completed categories and a target | Required grade on the remaining course weight |
Formula
Weighted grade vs points grade
Use this calculator when your class is split into categories such as homework, quizzes, tests, and projects. If your teacher grades by total points instead, use the regular grade calculator or test grade calculator so points earned and points possible drive the answer.
How to use it
- Choose how many grading categories your class uses.
- Enter each category grade as a percent.
- Enter each category weight from the syllabus or gradebook.
- Use needed mode when some course weight is still unfinished.
How to interpret the answer
If the entered weights add to 100%, the result is the course grade. If they do not, the calculator reports a normalized grade using only the weights you entered and warns you to check the category weights.
What if the category weights do not add to 100%?
A partial gradebook can still be useful, especially early in a semester. The normalized grade answers, "How am I doing in the categories entered so far?" A final course grade usually needs every weighted category from the syllabus so the weights add to 100%.
Using this with the final grade calculator
Use the weighted grade calculator to combine category grades first. Then use the final grade calculator when the remaining work is one final exam or one final project with a known weight.
Common mistakes
- Use category weights from the syllabus, not the number of assignments in each category.
- Do not enter individual assignment points unless each assignment is its own category.
- In needed mode, completed category weights plus remaining weight should usually equal 100%.
- Do not mix decimal weights and percent weights. Enter 20 for a 20% category, not 0.20.

Frequently asked questions
How do weighted grades work?+
Each category grade is multiplied by its category weight. Those weighted contributions are added to get the course grade.
What if my weights do not add to 100%?+
The calculator warns you and shows a normalized grade based on the weights entered. For a final course grade, your class weights should usually add to 100%.
Can I use this for weighted GPA?+
No. This calculator is for weighted course categories. Use the GPA calculator for credit-weighted grade point averages.
How do I find what I need on remaining work?+
Choose Needed on remaining work, enter completed category grades and weights, then enter the remaining course weight and target grade.
Should I use this before the final grade calculator?+
Yes, if your current class grade is made from weighted categories. First calculate the weighted course grade so far, then use that grade as the current grade in the final grade calculator.
