Assignment Weight Impact Calculator
Use this assignment weight impact calculator when one upcoming assignment has a known direct weight in the course grade. It shows the projected grade and how many percentage points the assignment adds or removes.
Use your current grade before this assignment is counted. Enter 86 for 86%.
Use the assignment's direct share of the course grade, not its share inside a category.
Enter the score you earned or expect to earn on the assignment.

What this assignment weight impact calculator solves
This calculator answers a direct-weight question: if my current course grade is known and one assignment is worth a specific percent of the whole course, what will my course grade be after that assignment is counted?
Formula
How to use it
- Enter your current course grade before the assignment is counted.
- Enter the assignment's direct course weight as a percent.
- Enter the assignment score you earned or want to test.
- Read the projected grade and the percentage-point change.
How to read the answer
The projected grade is the course grade after the assignment score is blended with the remaining current grade. The grade change shows the assignment's effect in percentage points.
When to use another grade tool
Use the weighted grade calculator for full category systems, the final grade calculator for a final exam target, the test grade calculator for one assessment score, and the missing assignment calculator when a zero or makeup score is involved.
Common mistakes and edge cases
- Do not enter a category weight unless this assignment is the whole category.
- If the assignment weight is inside a category, first calculate its category effect or use the weighted grade calculator.
- A small assignment weight may only move the course grade a little, even with a very high or low score.
- Scores above 100% usually mean extra credit, a curve, or a custom grading rule.
Worked examples
Ten-percent project
An 86% current course grade with a 92% project worth 10% of the course.
Projected grade
86.6%
Low quiz with small weight
A low quiz score does not move the course grade much when the direct weight is small.
Projected grade
90.16%
Large exam weight
A major assessment has a much larger effect on the projected grade.
Projected grade
81%
Invalid weight
A single assignment cannot be more than 100% of the course.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate how much an assignment affects my grade?+
Multiply your current grade by the part of the course not covered by the assignment, multiply the assignment score by the assignment weight, then add the two pieces.
Is assignment weight the same as category weight?+
Not always. If homework is 20% of the course and this assignment is only one homework item, the assignment's direct course weight is smaller than 20%. Use the weighted grade calculator for category systems.
Why did a bad score barely move my grade?+
The smaller the assignment weight, the less it can move the overall course grade. A 2% assignment has a much smaller effect than a 20% exam.
Can this calculate a final exam score?+
Use the final grade calculator for final exam targets. This calculator projects the grade after a known assignment score, while the final grade calculator solves for the score needed.
What if the assignment is extra credit?+
Extra credit rules vary by class. If the extra credit has a direct course weight, this calculator can model it, but many teachers add extra credit differently.
