Grade Target With Assignment Calculator
Use this calculator when one upcoming assignment has a known direct course weight and you want the score needed to reach a target course grade.
Use your current grade before this assignment is counted. Enter 86 for 86%.
Use the assignment's direct share of the course grade, not its share inside a category.
Enter the course grade you want after this assignment is counted.
Use 100 for normal full-credit scores, or a higher value if extra credit is possible.

What this assignment target calculator solves
This calculator works backward from a target course grade. It solves the assignment score needed when the assignment has a direct percentage weight in the course.
Formula
How to use it
- Enter your current course grade before the assignment is counted.
- Enter the assignment's direct course weight as a percent.
- Enter the target course grade you want after the assignment.
- Enter the maximum possible assignment score.
- Check whether the needed score is reachable under that maximum.
How to read the answer
The score needed is the assignment percentage required for the blended course grade to reach the target. If it is above the maximum score, the target cannot be reached with this assignment alone under the entered policy.
When to use another grade tool
Use the assignment weight impact calculator when you already know the assignment score. Use the weighted grade calculator for full category systems, and use the final grade calculator when the remaining score is a weighted final exam.
Common mistakes and edge cases
- Do not enter a category weight unless this assignment is the whole category.
- A small assignment weight may not be enough to reach a high target.
- A target can require more than 100% if the assignment weight is small or the current grade is far below target.
- Scores above 100% usually mean extra credit, a curve, or a custom grading policy.
Worked examples
Reach a target with one weighted assignment
An 86% current grade needs about 94.33% on an assignment worth 12% of the course to reach 87%.

Already safe
A low target can stay safe even with a 0% assignment score.
Assignment score needed

Unreachable with normal maximum
A small assignment may not carry enough course weight to reach a high target.
Assignment score needed
>100%
Invalid assignment weight
The assignment must have a positive direct course weight.

Frequently asked questions
How do I find what score I need on an assignment?+
Subtract the current grade portion from your target grade, then divide by the assignment weight as a decimal.
Is this the same as the final grade calculator?+
It is similar, but this calculator is for any one direct-weight assignment. Use the final grade calculator when the score is specifically a weighted final exam.
What if the score needed is over 100%?+
Then the target is not reachable with a normal full-credit score on this assignment alone. You may need extra credit, more remaining work, or a different grading policy.
Can I use this for category weights?+
Only if the assignment is the whole category. If the assignment is one item inside homework, tests, or projects, use the weighted grade calculator or calculate the category effect first.
What does direct course weight mean?+
It means the assignment itself is worth that percent of the entire course grade, such as a project worth 12% of the course.
