What this grade calculator solves
This calculator turns point totals into a class grade or assignment grade. It is best for point-based gradebooks where each assignment adds earned points and possible points.
Formula
Class grade, test grade, or weighted grade?
Use this grade calculator for a point-based class grade or assignment grade. Use the test grade calculator for one test, quiz, or score like 37 out of 45. Use the weighted grade calculator when the syllabus has categories like homework 20%, tests 40%, and projects 25%.
How to use it
- Enter the points you earned.
- Enter the total points possible.
- Add extra credit points if your teacher counts them as bonus points.
- Set a target grade to see how many points you still need.
How to read the answer
The percent grade is the earned share of possible points. The letter grade uses a standard scale, so check your syllabus if your teacher uses plus/minus cutoffs, rounding, curves, or a custom grade scale.
Can I still get an A?
Set the target grade to your A cutoff, usually 90% or 93%. The result panel shows how many more points are needed for that target and compares the current point total with common pass, C, B, and A checkpoints.
Common mistakes and edge cases
- Do not mix weighted categories into one points total unless your gradebook truly uses points.
- Extra credit should be entered only if it is added before the percent is calculated.
- A grade above 100% is possible when bonus points or extra credit exceed the base total.
- Use the weighted grade calculator when homework, tests, quizzes, and projects have separate weights.
- Do not put future ungraded assignments in points possible unless the gradebook already counts them.

Frequently asked questions
Is this the same as a weighted grade calculator?+
No. This calculator is for point-based grades. Use the weighted grade calculator when categories like homework, tests, projects, and finals each have their own percent weight.
What grade scale does it use?+
It uses a common A/B/C/D/F plus-minus scale. Your teacher may use different cutoffs, rounding, or curves, so use the letter grade as a helpful estimate.
Can I calculate what I need to get an A?+
Yes. Set the target grade to 90%, 93%, or your class cutoff, then read the points needed to reach that target.
Should I include assignments that have not been graded yet?+
Usually no. Use the points currently counted in your gradebook unless your teacher already includes missing or future assignments as zeros.
What if my class uses categories instead of points?+
Use the weighted grade calculator instead. This point-based calculator assumes every point goes into the same total.
