What this test grade calculator solves
| Mode | Use it when | Output |
|---|---|---|
| Points earned | You know your earned points and total points | Percent, letter grade, missed points, and points to the next grade |
| Points missed | You know how many points you lost | Earned points, percent, and letter grade |
| Points needed | You want a target test score | Points needed and how many points you can miss |
Formula
Points earned, points missed, or questions missed?
Use points earned when the teacher gives a score like 37 out of 45. Use points missed when the gradebook shows how many points were lost. If questions are worth different amounts, do not use the number of questions missed unless each question has the same point value.
How to use it
Enter the total possible points, then choose whether you know points earned, points missed, or a target score. Extra credit is optional and is added before the percent is calculated.
How to interpret the answer
The letter grade uses a common A/B/C/D/F scale. Your class may use different cutoffs, rounding, curves, or standards-based grading, so use the result as a planning estimate.
How many points can I miss?
Choose Points needed, enter the target percent, and the calculator shows both the points required and how many points can be missed from the base test total. Extra credit lowers the regular points needed because it is added before dividing by points possible.
Common mistakes
- Do not add extra credit to points possible unless your teacher explicitly says the test total increases.
- Use points missed only when you know the lost points, not the number of questions missed.
- If questions have different point values, use points, not question count.
- Do not round early. A score like 37 out of 45 should be divided first, then rounded after converting to percent.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a test grade from points?+
Divide points earned by points possible, then multiply by 100. For example, 42 out of 50 is 42 / 50 x 100 = 84%.
Does extra credit go on top of points earned?+
This calculator adds extra credit to points earned before dividing by points possible. Some teachers handle extra credit differently, so check the assignment rules.
Can my test grade be over 100%?+
Yes, if extra credit or bonus points make earned points higher than points possible.
Is the letter grade official?+
It uses a common letter-grade scale. Your school or teacher may use different cutoffs, plus/minus rules, rounding, or curves.
What grade is 37 out of 45?+
37 out of 45 is 37 / 45 x 100 = 82.22%, which is usually a B- or B range depending on the class grading scale.
