Frequently asked questions
Should I tip before or after tax?+
Most tip math uses the pre-tax bill. Tipping on the post-tax total is also common and usually only changes the answer slightly.
How does rounding work?+
Exact cents keeps the mathematical total. Round total up rounds the full bill to the next dollar. Round each person up makes everyone pay a whole-dollar amount.
What is a normal restaurant tip?+
In the U.S., 18-20% is common for sit-down restaurant service. Local norms and service models vary.
Can this split uneven bills?+
This calculator splits evenly. If people ordered very different amounts, calculate each person's share separately or split the subtotal before adding tip and tax.
