How to use it
- Enter questions correct for English (out of 75), Math (out of 60), and Reading (out of 40).
- Choose whether to include Science (out of 40). The 2025 enhanced ACT made science optional; without it the composite averages the other three sections.
- Read each estimated 1-36 section score, the unrounded average, and the rounded composite.
- Treat every number as an estimate and compare it against real released conversion tables from your practice test when you have them.
How to read the answer
Each section score sits on the 1-36 ACT scale, and the composite is the average of the included sections rounded half up, so an average of 27.5 reports as 28. Because the scale is roughly linear, one extra correct answer usually moves a section by at most one point, and rounding gives some slack near the top, where missing a single question can still round to 36. Real test forms use their own conversion tables, so expect your official score to land within roughly a point or two of this estimate per section.
Common mistakes and edge cases
- Treating the output as official: every ACT form has its own raw-to-scale table, and this page uses one representative approximation.
- Entering percent correct instead of the number of questions correct.
- Forgetting that excluding science changes the divisor to 3; the composite is a fresh average of three sections, not the four-section average minus science.
- Expecting the composite to round down: ACT rounds half up, so an average of 26.5 reports as 27.
- Using enhanced-ACT question counts directly: the shorter 2025 forms have fewer questions per section than the classic 75/60/40/40 used here, so convert to the equivalent fraction correct first.

How accurate is this ACT score calculator?+
It uses a representative linear approximation of released ACT curves, so it is usually within a point or two per section. Every real test form has its own conversion table, which is why the same raw score can produce slightly different scaled scores on different test dates.
Is science still part of the ACT composite?+
Since the 2025 enhanced ACT, science is optional. If you take it, this calculator averages it into the composite the way the classic ACT did; if you skip it, the composite is the average of English, Math, and Reading only. Use the include-science toggle to match your situation.
How is the ACT composite rounded?+
The composite is the average of your included section scores with fractions of one half and above rounded up. An average of 27.5 reports as 28, while 27.4 reports as 27, so a single section point can swing the composite.
What is a good ACT score?+
The national average composite is around 19-20. A 24+ typically places you in roughly the top quarter of test takers, and 30+ is competitive at selective colleges. The most useful benchmark is the middle-50% range published by the specific schools you are targeting.
How many questions can I miss and still get a 36?+
It depends on the form, but on many released tests you can miss one or two questions across the test and still score a 36. This estimator reflects that: missing one English question out of 75 still rounds to 36, while sections with fewer questions are less forgiving.
Does this work for the shorter 2025 enhanced ACT?+
The inputs use the classic full-length question counts of 75 English, 60 Math, 40 Reading, and 40 Science. The enhanced ACT has fewer questions per section, so scale your raw score to the equivalent fraction correct first (for example, 40 of 50 correct is the same fraction as 60 of 75) and treat the estimate as rougher.
