What the expanded form calculator solves
Expanded form writes a number as the sum of the values of its digits, making place value visible: 4,825.37 = 4,000 + 800 + 20 + 5 + 0.3 + 0.07. Textbooks use three flavours: plain expanded form, expanded notation or exponential form with each digit multiplied by a power of ten, and, for decimals, fraction form where 0.3 becomes 3/10. This calculator produces all three plus the word form, and reverses the process.

How to write a number in expanded form
- Label each digit with its place: thousands, hundreds, tens, ones, then tenths, hundredths to the right of the point.
- Multiply each digit by its place value to get the digit's value (8 in the hundreds place is worth 800).
- Add the non-zero values with plus signs. Zeros are placeholders and are skipped.
- For exponential form, replace each place value with a power of ten: 1000 = 10^3, 0.01 = 10^-2.
Expanded form to standard form
Going backwards is addition: line up the terms by place value and add. 3 × 10^4 + 7 × 10^2 + 5 = 30,000 + 700 + 5 = 30,705, with zeros filling the empty thousands and tens places. The reverse mode accepts plain numbers, fractions like 7/100, and powers of ten written as 4 × 10^3, 4x10^3, or 4e3.

How to read the answer
Each term in the expanded form is one digit times its place value, and the terms always add back to the original number. In the exponential form the The small raised number saying how many times to multiply the base by itself. is the digit's position (positive left of the ones place, negative to the right). For negative numbers the sign wraps the whole sum. In the reverse mode the standard form is the exact sum of the terms; a warning appears if the terms were not the canonical one-per-place split.
Common mistakes and edge cases
- Writing 4,825 as 4 + 8 + 2 + 5. Each digit must be multiplied by its place value first.
- Including zero terms like + 0 or 0 × 10^1; they are correct but unnecessary and are usually omitted.
- Using 10^1 for tenths. Tenths are 10^-1; the ones place is 10^0.
- Writing the decimal part of the word form with 'point' instead of the place name: 0.37 is thirty-seven hundredths.
- Forgetting the fraction The bottom number of a fraction; it says how many equal parts make one whole. are powers of ten: 0.07 is 7/100, not 7/10.
