What this makeup points calculator solves
This calculator reverse-solves a point-based gradebook question: how many makeup, missing-work, or partial-credit points are needed to reach a target course percentage?
Formula
How to use it
- Enter the points you have earned so far.
- Enter the points possible so far.
- Enter the maximum makeup or missing-work points available.
- Enter the target grade you want to reach.
- Check the points needed and whether that target fits inside the available makeup points.
How to read the answer
The points needed is the amount of makeup credit required to reach the target after the assignment is included in the gradebook. The required makeup score converts that point amount into a percent of the available makeup points.
When to use another grade tool
Use the missing assignment impact calculator when you know the makeup points and want to project the grade. Use the grade calculator for a normal point total, the final grade calculator for final-exam targets, and the weighted grade calculator for category-weighted classes.
Common mistakes and edge cases
- Do not use this if the assignment is excused and should not be added to possible points.
- If makeup credit is capped, enter the capped point value as the available makeup points.
- A target can be mathematically unreachable if the available makeup points are not enough.
- If your gradebook uses weighted categories, a point-based estimate may not match the official grade.
Worked examples
Reach a B after makeup work
A student has 410 out of 500 points and can recover up to 50 points. To reach 80%, they need 30 makeup points.
Makeup points needed
30 points
Target is not reachable
A high target may require more points than the makeup assignment is worth.
Makeup points needed
82 points
Already above the target
A strong current grade may already meet the target even if the makeup score is zero.
Makeup points needed
0 points
Makeup points must be available
A zero-point makeup opportunity cannot be used to solve a target.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate how many makeup points I need?+
Add the makeup points possible to the current possible points, multiply that total by your target grade, then subtract the points you already earned.
What does it mean if the target is not reachable?+
It means the points needed are higher than the available makeup points. Full credit would still leave the grade below the target unless extra credit, a curve, or a different teacher policy applies.
Is this different from the missing assignment impact calculator?+
Yes. The missing assignment impact calculator projects the grade from a known makeup score. This calculator works backward from a target grade to the makeup points needed.
Should I enter a percent or points?+
Enter points for the current earned, current possible, and available makeup fields. Enter a percent only for the target grade field.
Can this handle weighted categories?+
This calculator assumes one point-based gradebook total. Use the weighted grade calculator if homework, tests, quizzes, or projects each have separate category weights.
