What this class average calculator solves
This calculator projects a new average after one known next score is added to an existing list of equal-weight percentage scores. It is the forward version of a next-score-needed target calculation.
Formula
How to use it
- Enter the percentage scores currently counted in the same grade group.
- Enter the known or expected next score.
- Enter a target average if you want a gap check.
- Read the projected average, average change, and target comparison.
- Use a more specific grade calculator if the next score is weighted, point-based, a final exam, or a retake replacement.
How to read the answer
The projected average is the average after the next score is included as one more equal-weight percentage. The average change shows how much that score moves the current average, and the target gap shows whether the projected average reaches your comparison target.
When to use another grade tool
Use the next score needed calculator when you know the target and want to solve the score required. Use the final grade calculator for a known final-exam weight, the weighted grade calculator for syllabus categories, and the test grade calculator for points earned on one assessment.
Common mistakes and edge cases
- Do not use this for a final exam unless the final counts the same as every other score in the list.
- Do not mix scores from different weighted categories unless your teacher averages them equally.
- A score below the current average can still be a good score, but it will pull the average down.
- Scores above 100% usually mean extra credit or a curved grading policy.
Worked examples
Add a known next score
Scores of 72, 84, 88, 91, and 95 become an 88% average after adding a 98% next score.

88%
Next score lowers the average
A 70% next score pulls an 88% current average below an 85% target.
Projected average
83.5%
Extra credit projection
A score above 100% can push the projected average past a high target when extra credit is allowed.
Projected average

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my average after the next score?+
Add the next score to the sum of your current scores, then divide by one more than the current number of scores.
Is this different from the next score needed calculator?+
Yes. This calculator projects the average from a known next score. The next score needed calculator works backward from a target average to the score required.
Can I use this for a weighted class grade?+
Only if the entered scores are averaged equally inside one grade group. Use the weighted grade calculator when categories such as homework, quizzes, tests, and projects have separate weights.
Why can a good next score lower my average?+
If the next score is lower than your current average, the average goes down even if the score is still strong on its own.
What if my next score is extra credit?+
You can enter a score above 100% if your teacher allows extra credit or curved scoring, but the calculator will warn you to check the policy.
