Retake Grade Calculator
Use this retake grade calculator when one quiz, test, homework, or assignment score can be replaced by a retake score. It compares the average before and after the replacement so the retake policy is easy to see.
Enter the percentage scores that currently count. Include the score that may be replaced.
Enter the new retake, correction, or replacement score.
Many classes keep the higher of the original and retake scores. Choose the rule from your syllabus.

What this retake grade calculator solves
This calculator answers a replacement-policy question: what happens to my average if one earlier score is replaced by a retake score? It is best for equal-weight percentage scores, such as quizzes or assignments averaged together.
Formula
How to use it
- Enter the scores that currently count in the quiz, test, homework, or assignment group.
- Choose whether the retake replaces the lowest score or a specific score from the list.
- Enter the new retake score.
- Choose whether the retake always replaces the old score or only counts when it is higher.
How to read the answer
The retake average is the average after one score is replaced under the policy you selected. The grade change shows how many percentage points the retake adds or removes from the original average.
When to use another grade tool
Use the grade drop calculator when a score is removed instead of replaced, the test grade calculator for a single test score, the grade calculator for point totals, and the weighted grade calculator when categories have different weights.
Common mistakes and edge cases
- Do not use this for a class where the original attempt and the retake are both averaged together.
- If the retake is lower and the policy says the higher score counts, the average may not change.
- If assignments have different point values or category weights, a simple percentage average may not match the official gradebook.
- If your teacher caps retake scores, enter the capped score as the retake score.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my grade after a retake?+
Replace the old score with the retake score, average the updated score list, then compare it with the original average. If your class keeps the higher score, use the higher of the old score and retake score.
Is a retake the same as dropping the lowest grade?+
No. Dropping removes a score from the average. A retake replaces one score with a new score, so the number of scores usually stays the same.
What if my retake score is lower?+
If the policy keeps the higher score, the old score still counts and your average may not change. If the policy always replaces the old score, the average can go down.
Can this calculator handle weighted categories?+
This calculator assumes the entered scores are averaged equally. Use the weighted grade calculator if quizzes, tests, homework, or projects have different category weights.
What if my teacher caps retake scores?+
Enter the capped score as the retake score. For example, if retakes are capped at 85%, enter 85 even if the raw retake score was higher.
