Retake Score Cap Calculator
Use this calculator when your teacher caps retake scores, such as counting a retake no higher than 90%. It shows the capped average, uncapped comparison, and how much the cap changes the result.
Enter the percentage scores that currently count. Include the score that may be replaced.
Enter the score earned or expected on the retake before any cap is applied.
Use the highest score the retake is allowed to count as under your class policy.
Choose whether the capped retake only helps when it is higher, or always replaces the old score.

What this retake cap calculator solves
This calculator models a retake policy where the retake score can replace an earlier score, but the counted retake score cannot exceed a cap. It compares the capped average with the average you would have had without the cap.
Formula
How to use it
- Enter the scores currently counted in the quiz, test, homework, or assignment group.
- Choose whether the retake replaces the lowest score or a specific score.
- Enter the raw retake score before the cap.
- Enter the maximum score the retake can count as.
- Choose whether the class keeps the higher score or always replaces the old score.
How to read the answer
The capped-retake average is the average after the cap and replacement rule are applied. The uncapped comparison shows what the average would have been if the raw retake score could count fully.
When to use another grade tool
Use the retake grade calculator when there is no cap. Use the retake score needed calculator when you need a target retake score, and use the weighted grade calculator when the retake is inside a weighted category.
Common mistakes and edge cases
- Some teachers cap the replacement score, while others cap only the improvement. This calculator models a replacement-score cap.
- A higher-score policy can ignore a capped retake if the capped score is below the original score.
- If both attempts count, this replacement model is not the right policy.
- Scores above 100% usually mean extra credit or a curved grading policy.
Worked examples
Retake capped at 90%
A raw 95% retake capped at 90% replaces a 72% score and lifts the average to 89.60%.

Cap is not binding
A retake score below the cap counts normally under the selected replacement policy.
Capped-retake average
88.8%
Capped retake below original
A higher-score policy keeps the original score when the capped retake is lower.

Specific score not found
The specific score being replaced must appear in the score list.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a retake grade with a cap?+
Cap the retake score first, apply the replacement rule from your syllabus, then average the score list after the replacement.
What does retake cap mean?+
It means the retake cannot count higher than a set score, even if the raw retake score is higher. For example, a 96% retake with a 90% cap counts as 90%.
Is this different from the retake grade calculator?+
Yes. The regular retake grade calculator assumes the retake can count at its raw score. This calculator adds a maximum counted retake score.
Can a capped retake hurt my grade?+
Under a higher-score policy it should not hurt because the original score stays if it is higher. Under an always-replace policy, a lower capped retake can lower the average.
Can I use this for weighted categories?+
This calculator assumes equal-weight percentage scores inside one group. Use the weighted grade calculator when tests, homework, projects, or quizzes have separate category weights.
